...What is the thing on the hood...?

My best guess is an external transmission cooler. But the length of lamp cord is a nice touch.

What the heck even is that? Some kind of swamp cooler?

I haven’t a clue, but I like the green lamp cord that powers it.

T hat’s kinda cool, in a rat rod, functional kind of way. Beginning of a new trend?

Form under function.

I’m trying to believe that they’re hoping the fan motor in that thing will give a supercharger effect.

It looks to me like some sort of hot water under dash fan coil heater. Especially with the heater hose type hoses and clamps. It might supplement the cooling capacity of the radiator during mud bogging or as suggested be a supplemental cooler for the transmission.....

I seem to recall heaters like those on school busses......

Looks small to me to add much cooling capacity to the radiator.

So do I; I drove school busses. Got my bus license at age 17.

Agreed, it’s something but not a lot....
